Shop safe online - protect yourself against scams
When shopping online during Black Friday (28 November) and Cyber Monday (1 December) sales, make sure to be alert to scams.
Cybercriminals use parcel scams, and create fake websites and social media profiles impersonating online stores to:
- steal your money or personal information or
- download malicious software on your device.
Slow down, think twice and check that you’re dealing with a legitimate person, business or organisation.
When you shop online
Know who you are dealing with:
- research the seller
- read the seller’s refund and returns policy
- check the site is secure (check for a padlock icon and ‘https’ is displaying in the web address bar)
- complete transactions through PayPal, BPay or your credit card.
Be cautious and be aware of:
- tempting or too good to be true offers
- new online stores
- unexpected or unusual links
- spelling of online store’s web addresses
Check the website has secure payment methods available and there is information on:
- privacy policy
- terms and conditions
- ABN and
- contact details.
